I have not read an Orson Scott Card book since revisiting Ender's Game a few years ago. Then I picked up The Lost Gate and fell in love with his new magical world. Poor Danny is teased and ostracized by his extended family because he is a drekka-- a person with no powers. He is tormented by his family until he realizes he is actually a very powerful mage-a GateMage that is now forbidden. Knowing that his family would kill him if his power came to light Danny flees the compound and takes up with a drifter who wants Danny help him to steal electronics. Danny uses his ability to do this but only briefly. He meets a mysterious man who directs him to someone who can teach him how to build greater gates. Can he escape the Gate Thief and his family?

Alright people time to get the wheels rolling this year. Finally.... The book we aree planning to read is called World War Z and is available at the Eastchester Public Library. I am not sure why but I was charged $0.50 for the book so bring money just in case since the books are on hold for us.

I personally do not have the touch screen one since it was cheaper and just as good. It doesn't work off amazon but rather has its own server so it's inventory grows over time.

The Summer Reading

So apparently the new requirement for this summer for people entering grades 9-12 is that everyone has to read the book by Mark Haddon, the curious incident of the dog in the night- time.

But Guess what?

Last year we read this in book club last year. :D

In the addition for anyone taking the 11H course next year we have to read the book One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Guess what? It's an awesome movie too!

Funny Easter Story

A man was driving along the highway when saw the Easter rabbit hopping across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid hitting the rabbit, but unfortunately the Easter bunny jumped in front of the car and was struck by his car.

The basket of eggs and candy, the rabbit was carrying, went flying all over the place. The driver, being a sensitive man, as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the road, and got out to see what had become of the rabbit carrying the basket. Much to his dismay, the colourful rabbit was dead. The driver felt so awful, he began to cry.

A woman driving down the highway saw the man crying on the side of the road and pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong. 'I feel terrible', he explained, 'I accidentally hit the Easter rabbit and killed it. Children will be so disappointed. What should I do?'

The woman told the man not to worry. She knew what to do. She went to her car trunk, and pulled out a spray can. She walked over to the dead, limp rabbit, and sprayed the contents of the can onto the furry animal. Miraculously the Easter rabbit came to life, jumped up, picked up the spilled eggs and candy, waved its paw at the two humans and hopped down the road. 50 metres away the Easter rabbit stopped turned around, waved and hopped down the road. 50 metres further on, he turned again, waved and hopped another 50 metres, again he waved.

The man was astonished. He couldn't figure out what substance could be in the woman's spray can. He ran over to the woman and asked, 'What is in your spray can? What did you spray on the Easter rabbit?'

The woman turned the can around so that the man could read the label. It said: 'Hair spray. Restores life to dead hair. Adds permanent wave.'

Hey guys happy thanksgiving here's some humor :)

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary.

Every word out of the bird's' mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to 'clean up' the bird's vocabulary.

Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed.

Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute. Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer.

The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior."

John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude.

As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird spoke-up, very softly, "May I ask what the turkey did?"

So the EHS Eagles girls varsity soccer team have won the title of section champions! It was an incredible game and we are the first girls team to make it as far as we have in 35 years. In addition to that many of the teachers were there including:

Mrs. Moskowitz

Mrs. Lindell

Mrs. Tacoma

Mr. Beincardi

and a couple of other teachers whose names escape me. Regionals are on Wednesday at Yorktown HS with a $7 admission fee.

But then again go Players Club! lol

The new policies, rules and regulations have once again streained our rights at Ehs. The Student IDS now must be worn like dog tags or else us, the students face the consiquences. This is so stupid. If they were really worried about our safety they would have done this years ago when the teachers had to start wearing them. Which I have to say 85% of the faculty don't even wear their ID's in the first place. I am going to prepare a power point presentation and a petition for people to sign to try and counter these rediculous, communist and tyranicle rule the principles now have us under. For if communism starts in the classroom it will soon spread in our democratic nation (despite the fact that I rule over you all as dictator.)

I mean really I've been really good this summer about choosing books to read. IF I do say so myself. I mean I only took ONE book out of the library that I couldn't even read a chapter of because I saw some grammar errors and they really ticked me off. So sorry but I had to give that one up.

Anyone hear of Fiorello? Hehe it rhymes... Well anyway it is the summer production for EYC and has a great story to it. And yes since it takes place from 1915 to 1933 I will be wearing dresses from all assorted lengths. But (hehe) here's the price to see Sarah wearing a dress (because as some of you know what a rare sight it is to see me wearing a dress) $65 for Lake Isle Dinner theater. I think give or take. No offense to other people who like being on the cast but I don't think I'll be on it because tech crew applies more to me.

But anyway really the cover does really mean nothing. Unless it actually relates somewhat to the book. Because remember a cover is only used to make you pick the book up and say "Hmm. What is this book about?" and then you turn the book over or look in the inside cover and say either "This would be a waste of my time to read." or "Huh I think I'll try this out. It seems interesting."

So so so so. Awesometastic that the two people who actually posted on the blog are having an eventful summer. I'd like to inform you that the MIA members are enjoying summer too, I know from facebool ;D

I actually have had no time to read...ever. I still haven't gotten my class books in the mail(fail) but should have them this week. And am going to have no like beside those projects.

I'm doing the True History of Chocolate D: Its the only one I know, sorry Sarah. Thanks for raising my hopes for Infidel, I was scared I wouldn't be able to finish it in time due to boreduuuumbbb, like TOAFK.

So I lied, I read one book this summer, but really, I read it... 3 or 4 year ago and hadn't understood a word of it. So I reread it and enjoyed it so much.

Its called A Great and Terrible Beauty.

Its strange at times, but very... interesting. My mom bought it as a christmas gift because she liked the cover.

It's hard to explain what is really going on right now in the book. I haven't started the book for global yet. It kinda slipped my mind. Does anyone have the choices and what we have to do? I've been doing some just for fun reading--the above (its sequel just came out!) and 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher
I enjoyed them both out in the sun on my deck and late at night before bed. Both have teen girl heroines who are outcasts in high school and I identify with that!

Sad to hear about the HP letdown, havent gone yet, but for movies, I don't care too much as long as I get to see my fave chracters up there, and at this point I much prefer the HP franchise than the Twilight one.

My current book is Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and I'm lovin' the funny doodles interpersed with Junior's tale of woe.

Hey guys hope you are enjoying your summer so far. I've been keeping with the EYC thing. The show is called Fiorello. Maybe you've heard of it. We'll I'm on the cast but to be perfectly honest I think I would be happier on tech crew because to me it's much more fun. But that's my opinion.

So who saw the Harry Potter Movie anyway?Because I have heard reviews from it's okay to "Damn! That was *beeping* horrible!" I'm seeing it on Friday with Kelly once she gets back from Penn State Fencing Camp.

Anyway I think you should look at this book that I found in Barns N Noble. It's called End of the Century by Chris Roberson. And it has three main characters each from different periods of time in London. The first, Galaad, is your buddy Galahad who becomes friends with another buddy of ours, King Arthur! A little farther down the time stream near the JAck the Ripper killings is a detective that goes by the name of Sandford Blank with his companion Roxanne Bonaventure. At the eve of the new millenium (thats about 1999) our final character comes into view Alice Fell, a teenager who has begun to be plagued by visions to some special destiny. Three characters one destiny!

Well give it a shot and don't let the cover scare you away. Remember don't judge a book by it's cover

What For?

So I'm about 400 pages into Atlas Shrugged - waiting to read the other 800 pages of it, plus the 500 of Green Centuries, plus the other 1200 of another book for AP Gov. Fantastic.

Anyway, about a third into the book Ayn Rand's premise is reasonably obvious: there those that produce, and there are those that endanger productivity for the sake of equlity. In other words, money, representing individual self-interest, makes the world go 'round, and that is how it should be. As a reader there are points in the novel where one laughs good-heartedly at the victories and achievements of Dagny Taggart and Hank Readen, and at other times, one would give the world to have the ability to dive into the book's pages and slap some sense into the likes of Jim Taggart, and really, society in general.

Rand steers the reader to absolutely despise anyone that does not conform, at least in some respects, to Dagny's own philosophy of rational self-interest. The initial impression, naturally, is that Rand has managed to make a powerful, convincing argument - after all, based solely on the novel, there is no possible interpretation other that the nature of capitalism is positive, productive, and even necessary. The next one is, has she really?

Rand has conconted an impossible set of characters, ones that could not reasonably exist in real life. Anyone not on Dagny's ''side'' is either unbearably stupid, painstakingly naive, or quite simply, in Rand's own description, pure evil. Considering the context of the novel's publication - 1950s, with the domestic fear of communism probably at its Cold War peak - it is not a stretch to say that part of Rand's intentions was to make a defence of the American economic ''way of life'' (or at least its ideal); and while I can personally agree, to a certain extent, with the overarching point that she makes, I cannnot overlook the way in which she has decided to present her argument: she has intentionally reduced the opponent's philosophy to the absurd, making to attempt to refute the actual ''communistic'' argument as it is, but to form her own flawed viez of it and mercilessly attack that. Her tactic is effective, I suppose, just as every other form of logical fallacy if not carefully analyzed. But Jim Tagggart et al. cannot possibly be used to justly represent that which she is against - it is a ridiculous strawman, and regardless of the merit of the story, plot, literary ability, etc. of Atlas Shrugged, it is imopssible to use Rand's novel as any sort of valid evidence to make any kind of argument or thesis in the realm of the social sciences.

I can nimagine the critical lens a question that would be attatched to this book already: ''greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Based on your reading, analyze the validity of this statement.'' Any logical conclusion from Rand's novel would in some manner support the above quotation, but really, any argument that does base itself on any novel is useless: it is based on incorrect, or unexamined; or assumed-to-be-correct premises. The author of a novel is free to create a world to her own personal liking in her novel, and can shape the human nature and motivations of her characters with absolute liberty; a writer can present a capitalistic dystopia where the greed of the novel's antagonists corrode society itself, just as Rand has done in the opposite manner - and neither of then necessarily say anything true about what is, or what could be, of any particular human community. Analyzing the hypothetical, imaginary world of a fiction novel to make a sociological conclusion about the real world, thus, seems either illogical, if the objective is to arrive at some sort of truth, or purposeless.

Imagine if modern psychology worked in the same way as English Literature critical lenses. Do humans tend to be altruistic? Well, let's not bother with any empirical study of actual humans, let's pick up any random number of literary novels and draw out whatever conclusions that their respective authors intended us to draw.

Finally I have a moment to sit and type a bit about what I've been reading--We wish to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with our families: Stories from Rwanda by Philip Gourevitch. It is difficult to read at times but I'm tempering it with lots of swimming with Ava & Jordan. I know a little about the genocide but reading this has really ignited my anger, and what to do with that? well, after more research I shall let you know.

I certainly wish I was riding horses and milking cows in Costa Rica, how fun! Safe journey back.

and yes, Potter mania has me in its grip, I am counting the days!!!! I think I shall be at the midnight show, somewhere.

I hope that I'm not messing up the vocative case with "Amici". Anyhow, hullo friends. I just checked my email for the first time in months, and it turns out my science teacher sent me at least 5 emails that might've been helpful for studying for a number of tests. Alas, such is life. I couldn't fall asleep last night, even though I went to bed at like 1:30 AM, and I got this great idea. I'm going to attempt to write a book of some sort, and try my best to avoid making it completely cliched (I'm too lazy to figure out how to put an accent mark over the "e".) and lousy. The first thing I dreamt about when I finally feel asleep was that I was writing my book. And it opened up in a way similar to this:
Drip.
Drip.
That was the sound which echoed through the dark bathroom.

And then at some point I shock my readers by revealing, after a page or so of vague description, that the dripping is blood, and that there's a pool of it gathering on the floor beneath a corpse with multiple stab wounds that is resting on the side of the bath tub.

Yes, I say that everyone should read the book considering we have to do it anyway. Also, if everyone is going into AP World next year we could discuss the books that that we can choose for that assignment. I think it would be good too if we could organize a time to meet and talk about the books besides on the blog, which the majority of the Book Club members still need to join. We should go see a movie or go out for pizza sometime over the summer when everyone is free. I know I am going to be free for basically the whole summer. So whatever date is good for you guys is good for me.

There it is—hovering just in front of the stage, bobbing slightly in the breeze.So, there are undoubtedly millions more pairs of eyes watching than I can see. But it’s the ones here in the stadium that are breaking my heart. Hey guys

Hope you are enjoying the nice weekend so far. I just got my copy of the yearbook in the mail and wow it's amazing how many typos in it. Especially the one on the cover. Also did anyone see the tee shirts for the Art Honor Society? Eastchester is spelled wrong. Well nobody is perfect but it's still funny. ALso the number on the book is supposed to be the 84th edition not the 85th. Find Waldo! :)

I apologize for not making it to the meeting guys but I had to take a mandatory math pracitce regents for algebra 1. (Not everyone was a super genius in math in 6th grade.)

I heard Mrs.Ross was late (shame!) because she was planning the Rachel Vail visit or something like that for the 6th grade.

But anyway. Hopefully we can choose a few books for the summer because next will be our last meeting. (NOOOOOOOOOO!)

But I say we should celebrate!

Hey last meeting of the year doesn't mean the blog will die. I hope it won't, since i leave for costa rica on june 29th to july 13th. But i'll do whatever i can to try and get on it to update. So bring book ideas for Tuesday (Hint: summer reading list) and possibly some food. (nothing sticky because if it spills like the popcorn all over the carpet we probably will get in trouble. Maybe I'll bake something for you guys.
